Use REA with OpenAI Codex
Unofficial guide. This site is an independent community guide and is not affiliated with the REA project. For authoritative docs see the official REA website and the morluto/rea GitHub repository. Commands here are taken from the official README/docs (checked 2026-10-13); REA changes quickly, so verify against the official docs.
Codex is one of REA's officially supported agents (client ID codex).
Set up
npx rea-agents setup --client codexOr with the global CLI:
rea setup --client codex --dry-run
rea setup --client codexRestart Codex after approving the plan. Codex treats an unset or empty CODEX_HOME as ~/.codex, so if you use a custom CODEX_HOME, run setup from a shell where it is set.
If --dry-run shows nothing in your terminal, that's a known bug — see rea setup --dry-run prints nothing.
Verify
rea doctor --client codex --json
